COMDB Safety Share! When exiting a cab at 147 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, Canada (The Danforth Music Hall) to see Cristone “Kingfish” Ingram, be aware that you are actually  exiting not onto the sidewalk but directly into a bike lane where it is quite possible that some hopped up on steroids one-balled biker is trying to set a new urban land speed record, pedestrians be damned. Although I wasn’t fatally injured during the incident, if looks could kill I would have been. I wished the psyched cyclist Godpseed, a velocity that he was near to attaining just before his sudden stop inches from me. *

COMDB Restaurant Recommendation! When at 147 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, Canada (The Danforth Music Hall) to see Cristone “Kingfish” Ingram, if you are early and feeling a tad peckish I would suggest Allen’s, an indoor outdoor, down to earth, upscale, middle of the road, but not over the top, dining establishment with a nice brew selection and some tasty vittles too.

Love the Czech pattern.

Speaking of Godspeed, there was one on Allen’s menu. Their Mavý Ležák 12⁰ triggered a memory of a past Godspeed Brewery sampling, their Polotmavý Ležák 11⁰, a semi-dark lager in Czech, therefore  Mavý Ležák = Dark Lager. ** You had me at Mavý.

The barkeep poured like the pro he is, a beauty ominous dark pour with a tan two finger topper. And dark it was. Dark enough to become the topic of conversation of the table. CC compared it to “ink” which seemed a fitting comment as we snacked on calamari appetizers. The Department of Temperance questioned why anyone would drink something that looked like ink (knowing full well who would), while she worked on her second Caesar. My old buddy SC was experienced enough to know not to comment on any of the comments and simply said “cheers” and we were off to the races.

A full-fledged cocoa malt aroma, this brew was as ready to rock as our team was, perhaps more so. The first swig was full flavoured roasted malt and cocoa, smooth and strong but no bitters. Very tasty. A nice malt cocoa balance that was consistent start to finish. Strong, intentionally intense, but never overbearing. In short a great Czech dark.

Great friends, great food, great beer and great music, all combined for a great night, bike path be damned.

*Editor’s Comment: From what I heard, the incident was all your fault.

**Editor’s Comment: Czech brewing designates beers by degrees; the degree notes the weight of the extract (sucrose) in solution on the day it was brewed. The higher the degree, the more alcohol. 10° is about 3.5%, 12° is around 4.5% and 16° would be about 6.5% ABV.
