Just like LL Cool J and The Notorious B.I.G., I’m going back to Cali.* Work in the East, rest in the West. It’s been quite a while since my last Cali Common, ** a beer that I find is hard to find and not at all common. Perth Brewery has been good enough to whip up a Steam Beer for us and I’m eager to hop on this train.***
On our first trip to California me and the missus were asking for directions to La Joll-a and the locals were looking at us like we had two heads. Once they realized we were Canadian they understood the situation. “Oh, you mean la HOY-uh”. It’s almost like they speak a different language down there. ****
Time to get back on track and it’s full speed ahead with this es-steamed brew.
A copper-coloured Cali, with a nice head of steam. A caramel hop aroma competing or collaborating for my attention. The first taste is caramel with a hoppy edge to it, and some seemingly out of place metallic bitters on the finish and aftertaste. The finish settles down and this lager ale hybrid presents itself with caramel malt body and a crisp ale like finish. Classic cali, it’s nice to be back.
*Editor’s Comment: LL Cool J released the Rick Rubin written and produced song “Going Back to Cali” in 1988. The Notorious B.I.G. released his song of the same name, a play on the LL Cool J song title, in 1997.

***Editor’s Comment: Perth Brewery tell us the train portrayed on the can features the Railway Museum in Smith Falls, a National Historic Site.
****COMDB Translation Department: Spanish was once the language of California which explains so many Spanish place names. The end of the Mexican-American war of 1848 saw Mexico cede a substantial land package to the US which included what is today California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Today approximately 30% of the population of California speak Spanish. La Joya is Spanish for The Jewel.
