My money’s on Marshall Dillon.

Way back in the day when I was a kid the only shows on TV that I remember were Saturday morning cartoons, Hockey Night in Canada, the Ed Sullivan Show (loved that Topo Gigio) and Gunsmoke. The old man loved Gunsmoke almost as much as he loved to smoke. Let’s put it this way, we only had one TV but there was an ashtray in every room. Why we needed an ashtray beside the toilet was always a mystery to me.

In the early 60’s Westerns dominated the TV screen, there were lots to choose from.* And he checked out quite a few of them; Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel, Rifleman, Rawhide to name a few.  The show he didn’t care much for was Maverick. He felt like they couldn’t decide if it was a comedy or a western. “Are they just going to crack jokes or are they going to shoot somebody.”

This clunky flashback strewn segue is for Northern Maverick Brewers, and let’s put it this way, I enjoy a Maverick in my glass a lot more than the old man did on his TV screen. Case in point, their Handcrafted Lager. I know, the polar bear with the aviator shades is no doubt a reference to a more recent Maverick, equally cheesy but instead of saloon gun fight scenes they had top gun flight scenes.

Back to the Maverick in hand, their flagship Handcrafted Lager. A two-tone toffee amber pour, clear of body and head. A malt bread nose, lager for sure.  First taste is malty slightly amber like in presentation with a touch of caramel, but with slight crisp where the lager sweet usually is. Almost an ale like finish but no bitters.

A good solid full flavoured smooth easy drinking lager with a very mild ale like finish, another super suds offering from Northern Maverick.

*Editor’s Comment: In the late 50’s and early 60’s 8 of the top ten shows on TV were Westerns. During that time period there were as many as 30 western themed TV shows on the air. Gunsmoke was without a doubt the longest running and most successful, from 1955 to 1975 it had 20 seasons under its gun belt. James Arness, the star of the show, was 6’ 7” tall and was the brother of Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame. Maverick, with James Garner, lasted 5 seasons from 1957 to 1962. Garner left after 3 due to a contract dispute.
