That’s one cranky old dog you got there.

This hair of the dog looks dark, dank and dangerous. The Kame & Kettle crew make it clear that this is no run of the mill dark lager, but is in fact a black ale. They tell us “one sip and you’ll be wagging your tail”. I don’t know about all that tail wagging business, but I was looking forward to sampling their coffee and cocoa canine craft creation.

A thick pour, stoutlike and substantial. Black beauty pour with a tan topper. Porter or stout like in its aroma, the coffee and cocoa both present and accounted for. A full flavoured black ale, coffee and cocoa for sure, no hops or bitters but a slight espresso bitter after taste. A little thinner mouthfeel than a stout with a bit of an ale finish.  My first thought was why not just have a stout, but this ale kind of grew on me.

A good solid full flavoured dark ale, hair of the dark dog. It’s not a lager!

Editor’s Comment: The album cover artwork from Nazareth’s 6th studio album, the 1975 “Hair of the Dog”, was by David Fairbrother-Roe.
