Go hard or go home. No, it’s not an ad for Viagra, but things are looking up because it is a Rainhard Imperial stout, Hearts Collide. A love song from Green Day? What do you think I am, some kind of American idiot? * Not hard hearted, hearts collide is the ultimate soul mate meeting, an aortic interaction of two destined to be one, and yes, an Imperial Stout from Rainhard.

I’m not usually an imperialist but I was able and willing to take this heavy hitter on for size. I was happy to see that their present edition of Hearts is a coffee, vanilla and coca nibs combo instead of the original seasonally seasoned with cinnamon.  This was my original Valentine’s Day selection but I couldn’t resist a Perry Loved Mary love affair for V Day.

A heavy oil pour but not crude. A black hearts pirate’s pour with some kind of pearless oyster floating on top where a head used to be. Not a head on collision this one. An aroma of major cocoa comin’ down and soon to be goin’ down.  A strong roast cocoa body with a coffee bitters back end. It’s a sipper with swagger, not a bigger swigger. Strong but not boozy but it is a doozy. An intense cocoa coffee combo daring you to enjoy it, a dare I gladly accepted. It is balanced which is a must for an imperial. I’m not usually an imperial stormtrooper but this one was pretty good.  Not for the faint of heart as there is a collision involved.  In the final quaffs the 9% was making its presence known.

Rainhard attains super suds status with an imperial stout! Imagine that.

*Editor’s Comment: “Hearts Collide” is a 2009 release from Green Day, who also wrote and recorded the song “American Idiot” from the album of the same name released in 2004.
