Twenty Hazy Years

Silversmith Brewing Co.

6.5% Alcohol

I’ve got more hazy years under my hat than I would care to admit, but twenty hazy years sounds like a fairly accurate description of my formal education. Not so, in this case it’s a hazy day IPA. I took a bike ride of the V-twin variety down to the church for a vigil in Virgil and lo and behold, came back with a few brews from our friends at Silversmith. There are brews in the pews at this great little speak easy with enough atmosphere to breathe easy. Coming back from church with a brew or two might seem a bit sacrilegious, or just plain unreligious, to the Department of Morality. So let’s keep this to ourselves, shall we.

This New England style hazy IPA* comes with oats and lactose and looks like OJ, sounds like  Roadhouse Blues and breakfast brews to me. Unlike old Jimmy Morrison**, I never was much for beer at breakfast but I do enjoy a frosty adult beverage during an evening ball game on the big screen.  Unfortunately the Mr. Hyde version of the Blue Jays showed up to receive a shut out drubbing, so this was drown your sorrows suds rather than a celebration libation.

An orange, thick and hazy pour for sure, with a thin bubbly maze of haze atop the quaff. An aroma of hoppy juicy with a pinecone or two in there too. The mouth feel makes it clear there is lactose in the house with notes of oats. Got milk? This one sure does, no lack of lactose here, luckily I’m lactose tolerant. Definitely a more substantial mouthfeel than your standard IPA. Not as hoppy as the aroma or the IBU would suggest, it is balanced citrus, with the milk making it mango peachy? A juicy mellow with mild hops on the finish. Some bitters started to work their way in there too as it warmed a bit.

All those hazy years have added up to a juicy mellow milkshake milky smooth juicer with a bit of hoppy bitters on the finish, a balancing act worth applause.

*Editor’s Comment: Silversmith call this “a much beloved legacy brew from Black Oak Brewing Co.”, an Etobicoke based brewer that they acquired in 2022.

**Editor’s Comment: “Roadhouse Blues” is a 1970 song by the Doors. “Well, I woke up this mornin', And I got myself a beer, The future's uncertain, And the end is always near.” Morrison’s lyrics seem like a self-fulfilling prophecy as a year later at the age of 27 he was found dead in Paris France from what was reported as heart failure. No autopsy was performed.
