Island Double Time

Island of Imaginary Friends

Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery

8.2% Alcohol

I never had any imaginary friends growing up, I guess I was a bit of a loner. But our friends at Flying Monkeys have a whole island full. Imagine that! It reminded me of Tom Hanks and his four year-long one-sided conversation with his old buddy “Wilson”. Poor old Wilson couldn’t get a word in edge-wise with Hanks talking his leather stitching off.*  FM describes this as a “friendly island of sweetness”. How about an island of imaginary girl-friends, now that’s sweet.

For a brewery with the mantra “weird is normal” it shouldn’t be surprising that they make beers like this. Malt, rice, wheat, and a 3-hop base, then they dry hop it with five different hops. Add a couple of different fruit purees for some fruit punch. Voila, a double trouble heaping helping of hops, grains and tropical fruit in a mish mash of malt madness. This has come to be expected from the same group that brought us “Adventures in Time Surfing” and “Frosty the Friendship Dragon”.

An orange juicy juice pour, thick and sticky as a stick. A full frothy head in our imagination only, in real life the head is negligible to nil. A juicy mango delight on the nose, a tropical paradise perhaps?  Tropical fruit and bitters make for unlikely bed fellows, first taste is tropical juicy and definitely a double for a backend burn of bitters. A tasty first taste but leaves you thinking how is it all going to end, this juicy bitter combo can’t be sustainable, can it?  Chip and dip interlude, now for round two.

The one two mango coconut puree punch combines for a pineappley pint. How do you like those pineapples? Mango coconut pineapple stays the course with the bitter bite follow-up consistent beginning to end.  This brew has double everything, especially flavour. The 8.2% is kicking in and I’m on imaginary island time now.

A strong juicy full mouthfeel double that is as complex as it is juicy. Perfect for those who like a beer that is a strong juicy full mouthfeel double that is as complex as it is juicy.

*Editor’s Comment: Tom Hanks starred in the year 2000 movie “Cast Away”. Hanks, a FedEx manager, finds himself delivered incorrectly to a deserted island alone for four years, during which time he befriends a volleyball aptly named Wilson, since that is the brand name printed on the ball. Hanks was nominated for the best actor nod at the 2001 Academy Awards and was very deserving, but lost out to Russel Crowe’s Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in “Gladiator”. Hanks had previously won the best actor Oscar for his role in “Philadelphia” in 1994 and his 1995 win for “Forrest Gump”.

Final Rating: 15 out of 20. Imagine That!
