This review just confirms that I have already failed one of my new year’s resolutions. Note to self: focus on challenging but achievable goals, avoid those aspirational BHAGs.*

Of course, the name “Kapow!” and the associated graphics are from Batman comics. As a kid I was a Batman fan. I guess Batman didn’t need the kind of suspension of disbelief that Superman or some of the other super-heroes of the day required. I mean Batman was a guy, a rich guy who was an incredible fighter with lots of gadgets, but still a guy. Not an alien or an altered DNA being. Batman in my childhood was a goody goody, not the dark knight of his origins** or the more recent screen versions. And as a kid I loved the corny campy 60’s TV show with Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin and an all-star cast.***

The bat climb up the side of apartment building (obviously them walking bent over and the camera turned at a 90 degree angle) was an opportunity for some star cameos as well. Apart from the back story and the main characters names, about the only thing directly taken from the comics for the TV show were the graphic “Boffs” “Twhacks” and “Kapows” as Batman and Robin disposed of bad guys.

Batman and Robin say hi to Sammy Davis Jr. on the bat climb.

A brace for impact name like Kapow! didn’t seem to go with the more mellow nature of a West Coast IPA but who knows, maybe it will knock me back into last year. This brew pours clear peachy golden, not a citizen of the carbon-nation (no bubbles) and with a bright white head. The aroma is a hoppy zing at first, not a “Kapow!”, maybe just a Pow.  Then a Wow as the stone fruit aroma emerges and smells delicious. Does the nose know? No. As it turns out the nose can be easily fooled.

A funky fruity hoppy first swig with some understated hoppy bitters. Despite no carbonation the second swig commences with fizz playing a minor but notable role. The fruit mellowed a bit, a funky mild malt hung in there with a bit of a fizz. No kapow! or Wow for that matter. The combination of mild fruit, malt funk and fizz just didn’t rise to the occasion for me. This beer did give me a chance to reminisce about Batman though.

This west coaster on my coaster was not a super hero or a super suds candidate today.

*Editor’s Comment: Big Hairy Audacious Goals.

**Editor’s Comments: Batman first appeared in a 1939 comic book. Originally he was a ruthless killer who used guns to take out even more nefarious characters than himself. In the mid 50’s congress headed up an inquiry into juvenile delinquency and the impact that violent comic books had on youth. In response to these concerns the Comics Magazine Association of America established the Comics Code Authority and standards. As a result, DC softened the Batman character into a gentler superhero and the familiar super villains were toned down as well.

***Editor’s Comment: The 1966 show was introduced in colour and ran for three seasons. Supporting cast included Cesar Romero as the Riddler, Burgess Meredith as Penguin, Julie Newmar as Catwoman (Eartha Kitt the third season) and Frank Gorshin as the Riddler. Other one time villains included Vincent Price, Art Carney, Roddy McDowell, Liberace, Rudy Vallee, Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Shelly Winters, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Joan Collins. Bat climb cameos were a who’s who of Hollywood in the day including Jerry Lewis, Dick Clark, Bruce Lee, Sammy Davis Jr., Werner Klemper (Hogan’s Heroes Sgt. Schulz), Don Ho, Art Linkletter, Edward G. Robinson, to name a few. Of course if you are under 60 years old chances are you will know none of these stars.
