Fracture Series Hazy Imperial IPA

Amsterdam Brewery

10.5% Alcohol

Hamsterdam is my go to brew.

All hail the king of hops”, so say the Amsterdam brewers* about their imperial IPA. If it’s big numbers that make you King, this brew has them in spades. But Peter Parker and I both know that with great power comes great responsibility.*

The current version of Amsterdam’s Fracture Juicy IPA ups the ABV to 10.5% from its previous 9% and an off the charts IBU at 105. These numbers add up to one hazy high voltage juicer.

A super hazy particles in suspension burnt orange sedimentary pour. A nice white crown is the head of the king. A juicy aroma, tropical and stone fruit. Maybe stoned fruits at this ABV?  The taste is very tropical and stone fruit juicy with a mildly boozy finish and were off to a tasty kick start. There is an imperial boozy back bite and burn, but not the extreme we sometimes get with imperials.

It has a full mouthfeel, large swigs are possible but not probable. This is one of the more accessible high ABV imperials we have sampled. The tropical juiciness is in balance with a fire and ice finish, which makes for an enjoyable and mellowing quaff.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, *** but this regal hopfest pulls it off.

*Editors Comment: Amsterdam Brewery is a Toronto based craft brewer that has grown considerably since opening in 1986. In 2022 Royal Unibrew bought them out for $44 Million CAD as part of their plan to expand into the Americas. They also own the Faxe brand and a number of other breweries.

**Editor’s Comment: Now our reviewer is quoting comic books. Variations of the saying date back to 1st century BC. The modern-day wording seems to have originated in the early 1800’s in British Parliament. In 1948 Clark Kent’s father tells him so much. The phrase first appeared in Spiderman comics in 1962 and Stan Lee’s use of the concept, coupled with the movie franchise, have popularized the current wording.

***Editor’s Comment: From quoting comic books to quoting the Bard. The modern day idiom “heavy is the head that wears the crown” is paraphrased from Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 2. It means with great power comes great responsibility.
