A light beer that technically isn’t light. * A pilsner that they say is a Euro style lager. An Off the Hop Brewhouse brew, brewed at Newark Brewery. Is anything about this brew as it seems? Is this one of Rumsfeld’s unknown unknowns? A hops and malt mystery wrapped in an enigma. Regardless of how perplexing the pint is, if there is beer involved you can be sure the COM are on the case.
It seems that Off the Hop is a virtual brewery, no bricks and mortar, just recipes and a passion for producing the perfect pint and brewing this one at Newark Brewing. As far as pilsners go, all pilsners are lagers but not all lagers are pilsners. ** And what started out with what they describe as a “Garage Beer Club”, the Off the Hopsters took the best of their 50 plus beer experiments to market. And voila, here I am pouring and scoring their enigmatic unfiltered Euro style Lager pilsner.
Upon popping the top this brew was eager to escape confinement, some frisky frothing the result. But no foam fest or cleanup crew required as it all settled quickly. The pour was a beauty, clear golden and effervescent. Looks like a winner, time to see if it’s a chicken dinner winner. A fresh malt aroma. The first taste is a light malt with a touch of apple. A smooth finish no real crisp or bitters. As it evolved the apple was gone, replaced by a bit of backend crisp. It seems to be getting lighter. Certainly very easy drinking, refreshing. Light but not a light, which was quite all right.
The COM have deemed this Off the Hop experiment a super suds success story.
