Mondo is an adjective that means something remarkable or striking, surfers would say a mondo wave is of epic proportions. They may not be outstanding in their field, but the COMDB translation department had a field day with the word “mondo”.  They tell us that in Italian and Spanish it means “world” while the word “monde” in French means world or earth. A macron* doffed “mondō” is a record of dialogues between a pupil and a Zen teacher. It’s a mondo bizarro we are living in they tell us.

Mascot Brewery claim they are Toronto’s chillest craft beer. The most chill, as in to chill out, relax. Go to Margaritaville with Jimmy**, or pop a top and add a sublime lime to a corona with Snoop Dogg. Even Frankie says relax.*** De-stress, not destress. Swimming pool cool. No noose, hang loose. Act like broccoli and veg out.*** Take a chill pill, act like a popsicle, be chilly as Willy, chillax. Hold on to your horses, cool your jets, give it a rest, keep your panties on. RELAX!  My recommendation for relaxing (no prescription required) is to sit back in a comfy chair and quaff a chilled pint or two. Let’s do that, shall we.

It’s surfs up and endless summer for at least three months of the year here anyway. A golden sand beach pour with a west coast wave breaker head.  Pine on the nose with some mild fruit hiding behind the tree. Despite the name mondo, this brew has mild written all over it. A mild child, mild not wild. Mild hoppy pine with milder fruit and a slight bitter aftertaste. It is refreshing but the backend pine bitters are more dominant than any barely noticeable fruit. Not balanced, I feel a bout of scurvy setting in, more fruit please. It settles in to exactly what it is, that being a mild session IPA. I wouldn’t call it mondo, but they did.

*Editor’s Comment: A Macron is a straight bar above a letter. It is a diacritical mark, usually over a vowel to mark a long syllable. It comes from the Greek word “makrón” which means long. The word “makrón” ironically has an acute accent, again from the Greek and there to indicate a syllable with a high pitch, although an acute accent is used in many languages today and often has different stresses on the vowel in question.

**Editor’s Comment: Jimmy Buffet has probably made more money from one song that anyone, ever. Not at all laid back when it comes to finances, Buffet reportedly has a net worth of $1 Billion USD! Part of that fortune comes from his 28% stake in Magaritaville Holdings, which includes the restaurant and hotel chains that use the songs iconic name.

***Editor’s Comment: The 1983 release “Relax” by the band “Frankie Goes to Hollywood” was the band’s debut single and a number one hit. “Act like broccoli” is a line delivered by Julia Roberts to Richard Gere in the 1990 movie “Pretty Woman”, encouraging the workaholic business man to “veg out”.
