Mother and Child Reunion

Simcoe/Mosaic

Canvas Brewing Co.

Simcoe/Mosaic. It’s a family affair! But not literally, like Woody and Soon-Yi resulting in an uncomfortable family day at the company picnic. * It’s a wholesome Mother and child reunion relationship, more like Marie and Irene’s Nobel one, or Michelle and the girls. ** Time for a hop history lesson and how these Yakima Valley staples have a Canadian flavour to them.

Simcoe Hops were released in the year 2000 by Yakima Ranches out of Yakima Valley California. *** Many French-Canadian farmers were enlisted in the Yakima Valley to help grow the hops and naming the hops Simcoe after Simcoe County  in Southern Ontario, Canada played homage to the home of those Canuck farmers. John Graves Simcoe was the First Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada and Simcoe county is actually named after his Father Captain John Simcoe a British Naval officer, another positive parent progeny example.

Simcoe Hops served as the mother plant for Mosaic Hops, which were introduced in 2012 by the Hop Breeding Company (a JV with Yakima Chief Ranches). Sounds like this Canvas brew is a happy hoppy mother and child reunion that Paul Simon could sing about.* A potential Mother’s Day sampling perhaps? Like the cranky old men doing yoga, that’s a bit of a stretch I think. Celebrity relationship woes, history lessons, strained pop music references and other digressions behind us, it’s my favourite time of the day. That’s right, it’s pour and score time.

Golden slightly hazy and a bit bubbly, with a bright white one finger of foam to top it all off. It’s a pretty picture of a pour for sure. A light stone fruit aroma that’s quite inviting. First taste is a nice light stone fruit salad juicer that makes for an easy peasy pale ale. Refreshing and big swiggable (as in crushable). The juice is smooth with no bitters and an ever so slight tart finish. Tasty summer by the pool fare, this a light pale refresher.

*Editor’s Comment: Woody Allen and Mia Farrow were a couple for almost 10 years when Woody had an affair with his 17 year old step daughter Soon-Yi. Woody and Mia split and eventually Woody married Soon-Yi.

**Editor’s Comment: Paul Simon’s 1972 song Mother and Child Reunion from his self titled album was a top ten hit. Marie Curie and daughter Irene Joliot-Curie worked together and each won the Nobel Prize for their pioneering work on radioactivity. That’s them in the brew pic. Michelle and Barack Obama have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

***Editor’s Comment: Yakima Valley is the hop growing capital of the world, their hops found in tasty IPAs around the globe. The history of the emergence of Yakima has a Canadian twist to it. A Scottish Canadian inventor you may have heard of, Alexander Graham Bell, and his Father -in-law Gardiner Greene Hubbard (first president of the National Geographic Society) invested in the Moxee company in1886, to irrigate and farm the lands in the Yakima region. Various crops had problems but hops turned out to be their saving grace. Bell and Hubbard’s success with hops is credited to recruiting French-Canadian families to farm the crops.
