Schneider Weisse Tap Nummer 07

Schneider & Sons

5.4% Alcohol

No, not a typo, it’s Tap Nummer 07, from the Weisse guys at Schneider.  They tell us it’s the original recipe, brewed the same way since 1872. I say maybe it’s time to change things up a bit, guys. If I was still drinking the old man’s beer I’d be drinking a 50 instead of this winsome woe some wheat. Come to think of it, maybe in this case a 50 would be the preferred alternative. *

Half my glass has a nice amber shade to it, the other is a white as day foamy froth going over the brim to win. A little headstrong this one. 30 minutes later I catch a faint aroma through the half way subsided foam fest. That familiar but light malt wheat touch of banana, no floral yet on the nose. Finally able to get a swig in past the foam and it tastes…. foamy.  A light foamy/fluffy/pillowy mouthfeel. The malt banana barely comes on with a smoky flavour too, different in an eye brow raising show of concern way. The foamy banana exhibits a touch of sour, it seems off a bit. The fluffy soft mouthfeel is the main feature for this one. Very light classic wheat flavours, nothing over the top except the head. A subtle smokiness comes and goes, where it comes from and where it goes to I have no idea. The bottom line is a too foamy mouthfeel, mild wheat, a bit of banana, some smoke no mirrors, and a touch of floral on the aftertaste.

I thought a Weiss on ice would be nice, and from Germany no less. But I don’t think this one travelled well. I’m not a Weiss guy to start with and this one sure didn’t change my mind.

*Editor’s Comment: It made its debut in 1950, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the partnership between John and Hugh Labbat. Labbat 50, a blonde ale, was Canada’s best selling beer from 1968 to 1979. In the 80’s Blue took over as the brewer’s flagship brand. 50 is still sold today as one of more than 60 brands offered by Labbat, which is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev since 1995.
