North Street Lager

Decew Falls Brewing Co.

4.5% Alcohol

Decew Falls is at it again. Trying to educate me to local history. It just so happens that my Granddaughter did a project on Harriet Tubman* so I wasn’t caught in my unawares, so to speak. I knew about North Street, I guess that makes me street savvy.*

Just as Laura Secord was a local heroine in the War of 1812, Harriet Tubman was a local hero in the war against slavery and was known as the “conductor” of the “underground railroad”. The terminus was Salem Chapel in St. Catharines, today preserved as a National Historic Site. Tubman’s North Street home served as a gathering point for orientation of newly arrived former slaves.

History lesson in the past, time for another Decew Falls brewski. Their Morningstar shone and their Shipman’s Stout landed well. This North Street history lesson pours a nice bright golden against the patio night lights. No near North head to speak of. A mild malt aroma some apple or floral maybe. First swig is a malt/ fruit/bitter all in a Rumble/tumble/ jumble. No real sequence it’s all there all at once. There is an appearance of a semblance of balance. It evolved into a malt fresh lager, no sweet detected but a bit of a bitter on the finish, not enough to call crisp, just enough to call it a bit of bitter.

A nice mellow lager no real sweet or bite. Smooth finish, easy going and going down.

*Editor’s Comment: Let me get this straight. Now your Grandkids are educating you and through them you have become street savvy?

*Reviewer’s Comment: Correct.

**Editor’s Comment: Hariet Tubman (1822 to 1913) was born into slavery in Maryland as Araminta Ross and was brutally treated as a slave. She escaped slavery in 1849 and returned a number of times to rescue her family. In all she organized and ran 13 missions to free slaves. With the onset of the Civil War she returned to the US to serve as an armed scout and spy for Union forces. She led the raid at Combahee Ferry which freed 700 slaves and is credited as the first woman ever to lead an armed military operation in the US.
