8.6 Black

Bavaria Brewery

8% Alcohol

The last 8.6 we tried was a contrarian Bavarian. I was expecting German and got Holland. I was expecting an IPA and got an IPL. As far as the 8.6 name goes, nothing too complicated about that. Their flagship Lager is 8.6% ABV, “intense by nature” they call it.

Long before cell phones, Agent 86 was using cutting edge technology, the shoe phone.

86 is in the news today, a sea shell scandal so to speak.* But when it comes to the secret service, the 86 I recall was Agent 86, Maxwell Smart. I remember watching the show as a  kid “and loving it”. **

This big bold black Bavarian Brewer beer is an interesting departure from the traditional stout. At 8% ABV the alcohol is almost twice a typical stout and 20 times an alcohol free one. ***

A black as advertised pour, a tan to white topper, all in all a fine-looking stout. The aroma is roasted malty (not malt), it actually smells creamy. The taste is a surprisingly sweet creamy cocoa with a strong roasted malt finish. It’s too sweet and smooth to really notice the 8%.  No real espresso here the cocoa sweet to roast malt has center stage.

At first it took me a bit by surprise but I settled into this one. Not as sweet as a dessert stout but not far off? Not as strong as an imperial stout but not far off. Not as creamy as a nitro but not far off. Not a super suds stout, but not far off.

*Editor’s Comment: To 86 something is American slang to get rid of it. It has it origins in 1930’s restaurant jargon, when you were out of an item you would “86” it from the menu. Recently the term has been somewhat politicized. Right wing factions used the slogan 8646 on T-shirts, hats and stickers to support impeachment of the 46th President, Joe Biden. James Comey, the former head of the FBI, posted sea shells on the beach arranged in an 8647 pattern on Instagram and based on that has been indicted by posing a threat to the life of the current President.

**Editor’s Comment: The TV show Get Smart ran from 1965 to 1970. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, Maxwell Smart’s Agent number 86 was a direct reference to the slang meaning of that number. The show spawned a number of catch phrases. When the Chief would describe an assignment as very dangerous Maxwell Smart would respond with “and loving it.”

***Editor’s Comment: Collective Arts alcohol free Emerald Stout is 0.4% ABV.
