Field trip!

It’s been 4 years since my last visit to Bench! Too long gone I say. But there’s no time like the present to rectify that situation, especially when it comes to quaffing a cold one. But I’m no casual drop by see what’s brewing kinda customer, no sirree. I’m a certified member of the North American Guild of Beer Writers, * a seasoned professional as is obvious from my salt and pepper beard. I had prepared previously by perusing the online menu and an amber ale had caught my eye and fancy.

I was parked on the patio for a pint, and when the rhetorical question, “would you like something to drink” came up I was ready. “I’m partial to an amber and your Second Nature amber ale looks tasty.”  What I wasn’t ready for was the answer.  “I’m sorry sir, we just took that one off the menu yesterday, it’s been replaced with our peach wheat.” My Amber tapped out like a UFC rookie and replaced by a wheat beer no less! Unlike that UFC rookie I rolled with the punches and a Tongue Tied wheat was poured and scored.

Although wheat is not my go to brew, I have enjoyed a few peach wheats in my day so I thought about having an open mind. The beer name sounded familiar and sure enough I had previously sampled a Tongue Tied, an aggressive double that was double trouble.

A hazy and effervescent light golden pour, a fluffy froth on top of this tap. It has a flat peachy aroma. The first taste is peachy light, with no Bananarama or any other sometimes undesirable wheat traits. It has a dry pils like finish, with the peach in the finish too. The peach is in charge but not overbearing, over done or over the top. It is just peachy enough (but not too peachy) to be big swiggable, bonus!

Speaking of bonuses, my server was very accommodating and beer knowledgeable. We discussed various topics including the trials and tribulations of a professional beer reviewer when his favourite genre is no longer available and he has to drink a wheat instead and how said beer reviewer needs to keep an open mind.

Occasionally I’m pie-eyed, but seldom am I tongue tied when it comes to beer. I’m happy to sing this Bench brew’s praises.

*Editor’s Comment: This could well be, many would describe our Reviewer as certifiable.
