A visit to Clear Lake but this is no spa day, it’s a howl at the full moon Saturday night and the place is hopping. It’s a full house tonight and I’m straight to the bar, flush with cash, and with a credit card that should be dealt with. A wings special, a messy situation resulting in some flightless chickens I’m sure. Sober October is history,* it’s No Holds Barred November and time for a fest brew. How about a Märzen to harken back to Oktoberfests of the past, and what little we can remember of them.
I was at the cottage today getting some things done that I didn’t get done when I was supposed to get them done. Let me tell you, after a busy day of doing this, that and the other thing, all in the great outdoors, I think the great outdoors are vastly overrated. Unless of course you’re fishing. or drinking beer on the boathouse.
Time to score the pour, taste and tell, and asses the fest. Is this Märzen A-Märzen or just a Märzen?
A hazy nut brown amberesque pour. The head must still be festing in October because it didn’t show up tonight. Caramel malt on the nose, so it’s no surprise that the first quaff is roasted caramel malt with a very slight bitter finish. Smoothing and soothing after a busy day in the not so great outdoors. It is caramel malty but not sweet, with a nut-brown ale style bitter to finish this fest-tivities. The bitters gain prominence as the bottom of the glass gets closer to the top of the beer.
Full flavoured for sure. Not as smooth or as sweet as some Märzens, with ale bitters providing an edge. A good reprieve from the burn a hole in your esophagus wings.
