On the Road Again, Raglan That Is

Raglan Red

Four Rivers Brewery

5% Alcohol

On the road again, figuratively speaking, while sitting in my comfy Lazy Boy watching the Leafs. This beer is taking me back to my favourite East Coast town, Bathurst NB.* I have fond memories of my visits to Bathurst. The great people at Brunswick Mine. The missus would enjoy the Auberge spa while I did some East coast conventioning at Danny’s. I sacrificed a number of golf balls to Gowan Brae, beauty course. Watching the Titans keep their stick on the ice and win, which is what they usually did. Four Rivers opened in 2018 so a bit after my time in town, but it looks to be as friendly and fun as the Bathurst I remember.

A Four River’s Raglan Red please.

Raglan Red seems to be a tribute to Raglan Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin made famous by an Irish song and poem “On Raglan Road”.** Or it could be referring to the local band Raglan Road, a party and festival band of folk rock traditional East coasters. Doubtful that it is referring to the Downtown Disney pub Raglan Road in Orlando Florida, although it would be great to see Mickey and Minnie quaffing a Four Rivers Raglan Red at Raglan Road. Hey FR, get your marketing people on that.

This brew showed up in my most recent beer of the month club delivery but it isn’t our first Four Rivers sampling session, we enjoyed their Hazy IPA on our last East Coast tour.

This red poured as such. Beauty pour, dark rich red with a tan tam atop. A nice malt aroma, amber like on the nose as they say.  Watery easy mouthfeel, almost sweet first impression then a full malt barley body, a bit of dry bitter bite in the finish. Easy drinking full robust body with a mildly bitter finish, nice combo. Wet body, does that make sense? It has a unique light watery mouthfeel which combines nicely with the full flavour and some crisp bitters in the batter. Caramel starts to step up as the bitters abate. Very reminiscent of an amber, and I may have mentioned this before, I love me an amber.

Four Rivers has brewed a fine tribute to Raglan Road, and to Bathurst New Brunswick. Great beer.

*Editor’s Comment: New Brunswick is the only province in Canada that has two official languages.

**Editor’s Comment: “On Raglan Road” is a 1946 poem by Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh, who was a one time resident at Mrs. Kenny’s boarding house on the road that his poem made famous. The poem was put to music by The Dubliners in 1971 and later recorded by The Irish Rovers. Other notables who recorded the song include Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Roger Daltrey, Billy Joel and Ed Sheeran among many others. “On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew, That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue…….”
