On my way back from my East Coast armchair visit to Nova Scotia after being told to Frig Off, but I always know there is a warm welcome waiting in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Robert recommended a Mulligan from our friends at Four Rivers and there is nothing I need more than six or seven mulligans when I am out on the course at Gowan Brae. But today we have a beer of the month club brew from Four Rivers, their limited edition Lemon Pepper Belgian Blonde.
When I popped the top on this frisky Belgian it was frothing and foaming. So no surprise it poured a fulsome frothsome foamsome head. The half of the glass that wasn’t foam was golden, bubbly and a bit hazy. It has a spicy hoppy lemony aroma, not surprising given the name of the beer, but not appealing and was cause for some concern. The first swig was very fizzy, an earthy pepper hint of lemon odd combo. It will take some, as in a lot of, getting used to. Fizzy with mild lemon in the body but the pepper finish takes over big time and leaves something to be desired. As in I desire less pepper, as in next to none, or maybe even none. The brew evolves a bit, at times the pepper comes on more like a spice and clove as in a saison style, definitely not a typical blonde. Now it’s back, pepperier than ever, not a great combo in my books. This beer is not for everyone, including me.
Lemon and pepper fish is very good, lemon pepper beer not so much.
