Tributary? German Style Wheat? Can you see the concerned look in my words? When it comes to wheat beers I usually go against the grain. Not my thing. I love me an amber, but I’m not too sweet on the wheat. My last Avling adventure was a super suds experience from the opposite end of the spectrum. Their Czech dark Nightfall checked all the boxes for me so I’m trying to keep an open mind as I open the can. Weren’t the Hunger Games* competitors called Tributes? Twelve Tributaries (Districts) providing two Tributes each. At 1 out of 24 surviving I don’t think the odds were ever in their favour. Let’s hope for better odds with this brew.

This time they tag teamed with Tailgunner for their Tributary. Let’s see if the river runs high, or if we’re up the creek without a paddle. In other words, it’s time to pop, pour, and score.

A golden opaque pour, muddy waters but orange, not the blues. Malt bread and floral on the nose, with some classic Hefeweizen banana and spices for good measure. A creamy mouthfeel to go with the extra pulp pour. The taste is malt sweet, and the banana boat has landed. I was waiting for Harry Belafonte to strike up the band.**  It has a slight bitter to sour finish from the spices. Interesting and different, not your run of the grain mill wheat which is a good thing. Just enough banana to be appealing.

Usually not my thing, but drinking it while watching my Leafs go off on the Flyers didn’t hurt.

*Editor’s Comment: The Hunger Games is a movie franchise based on the books by Suzanne Collins. The books came out between 2008 and 2010 and were already a great success before being made into movies. The first movie came out in 2012 and launched Jennifer Lawrence’s career. The catch phrase “may the odds be ever in your favor” is not in reference to the competitors, but to the families of the districts in hopes that one of their loved ones is not picked to compete to the death.

**Editor’s Comment: Harry Belafonte recorded the best known version of The Banana Boat Song in 1956. The traditional Jamaican folk song is also known as Day-O.
