Haflings, not Avlings

If the name Avling has a familiar “ring” to it you might be thinking of Tolkien’s halflings.* The COMDB translation department has a different take on the brewer’s name, and tell us that “avling” in Norwegian means “crop”. Could they be alluding to this brewery’s rooftop garden crop, or the master brewer’s last haircut, or perhaps claiming that their brews are the cream of the crop? We will see about the cream of the crop claim. As for the master brewer’s haircut, to be honest, and no offense intended but, I’m just not that interested.

Avlings Rooftop Crop

The brew in hand today is Nightfall,** a  Czech-style dark lager, a style not unfamiliar to us COM. A pour as dark as it name would suggest. Roast and cocoa make for a sweet-smelling lager. It has a full roasted flavour with a bit of fizz and sweet, no bitter no hops, a smooth finish. Very tasty. The fizz fled, leaving a start to finish smooth customer. The malt roast and sweet is now in Righteous Brothers harmony without losing that “I’m loving this beer” feeling.*** A very tasty easy drinking dark.

*Editor’s Comment: John Ronald Ruell Tolkien first published “The Hobbit” in 1937 followed by “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Two Towers” in 1954. “The Return of the King” came out in 1955. Tolkien passed away in 1971 but more Lord of the Rings books have been published since then by his son Christopher based on the unfinished manuscripts of his father.

**Editor’s Comments: If the name “Nightfall” seems familiar it is the name of a novel by another famous author, Isaac Asimov. Published in 1941 as a short story it garnered a number of awards. It was turned into a novel in 1990 with the help of Robert Silverberg.

***Editor’s Comment: In 1964 The Righteous Brothers released the Spector, Mann and Well song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. It was a number 1 hit and ranked number 5 on the Billboard 1965 top 100. Over the years it has been recorded by a number of artists including Hall & Oates, Dionne Warwick, Long John Baldry and Telly Savalas (yes, Kojak). Tom Cruise lip synched it to seduce Kelly McGillis in the 1986 movie Top Gun.
