Eliot Ness headed up the prohibition forces way back in the day and busted up more stills than a serial photobomber. It seems ironic that Great Lakes Brewing out of Cleveland (not to be confused with Great Lakes Brewery out of Canada) * has put him on their amber, but after finally catching Al Capone, he ended up in Cleveland and even ran for mayor at one point. **
Nationwide Prohibition was long before the cranky old men were crabby young babies, and thank goodness for that. Staying dry for the shortest month of the year is a feat few of us can achieve, let alone months at a time. No wonder the bootleggers were raking in the big money back then.
As far as this post prohibition pint goes, amber is as amber does. And this one is clearly a slightly hazy amber. All caramel on the nose, a toffee toast for sure. The first taste is all caramel with a metallic harsh finish and aftertaste, a bit of an unwanted surprise for what I was hoping would be a smooth operator. Here’s hoping that the harsh finish goes the way of prohibition. Unfortunately it only smooths a bit but the back end bite remains. A harsh-Ness that was not endearing.
I love me an amber, and I enjoyed the front portion of this one, but it seems, just like in real life, that Eliot Ness had a rough finish. **
