Purity, or was it Serenity?

Purity Pilsner

Walkerville Brewery

5.2% Alcohol

I dated a girl named Purity once. Or was it Felicity? No. Maybe it was Serenity. No that wasn’t it either. Trinity perhaps? How could I forget, it was Chastity, but that relationship didn’t go too far. *

Walkerville is citing the Bavarian Purity Laws** as the origin of the name Purity Pilsner. Just to be clear, purity laws are not to be confused with holier than though in-laws.

While we are on the subject of names, the former town of Walkerville is now part of Windsor, Ontario. The town was founded by Hiram Walker in 1890. If that name sounds familiar, you are right, that’s the same guy that founded the Hiram Walker & Sons distillery that produces Canadian Club Canadian Whisky. ***

I think I can do it!

JT is beginning to struggle already with Dry February so I thought I would offer my support by participating in the 3 day challenge. No beer for February 29, 30 and 31st this year. Thank goodness it’s not a leap year.

As for this brew, it pours bright golden and clear with a bit of the old bubbly. An ever so slight fresco of foam on top. A very mild malt aroma, smells refreshing. The taste is a malty bit of lager sweet which morphs into a slight crisp finish. An almost creamy mouthfeel to it. Maltier than some pils, not as crisp as some pils. All Pilsner’s are lagers but not all lagers are Pilsner’s, that being said this pils is definitely a lager.

A good solid pilsner, no laws broken here.

*Editor’s Comment: It certainly wasn’t Brevity or Levity.

**Editor’s Comment: The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 states that the only ingredients in the brewing of beer in Germany must be barley, hops and water. More recently the law has been updated to allow yeast as well.

***Editor’s Comment: Hiram Walker first started a distillery in Detroit in 1858 but with prohibition looming in the states he moved across the bridge to Windsor. He started to develop Walkerville as a model community that he financed himself to provide housing and services for his employees.

Final Rating: No Laws Broken at 14 out of 20
