Take It Easy

Easy Stout

Walkerville Brewery

5.5% Alcohol

Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey wrote the iconic song “Take It Easy”* and it became the breakthrough hit for the Eagles. Browne said he didn’t know the Eagles had recorded it until he heard it on the radio. By the way, I like Browne’s version better. Rock n roll ramblings. Time to take care of my stout drought.

Leaves on the ground, cooler weather, no mosquitos, and stouts are coming out. All sure signs of fall. Time to kick off the Canadian version of Thanksgiving weekend (the Pilgrims arrived in Canada earlier?)  with an Easy stout from the folks at Walkerville. What could be easier on the palate than a cool and collected smooth silky milk stout? Let’s hope this one is one.

Walkerville is imagining a different time with this brew. Zoot Suits and Flappers, hush hush hallways and smoke-filled prohibition era lounges that served illegal adult beverages on the QT. The classic speakeasy.*  I remember as a kid the old man taking me into the pool room behind the barber shop where you could get a drink from the unlicensed bar in the dry county we were in. His instructions were very clear “Don’t tell your Mother”. That speakeasy had a pool table, a bar with a few chairs and a few spittoons along the wall. A couple of cranky old men looking at me like I was a cop, not realizing I was sworn to secrecy or risk suffering the wrath of the old man’s belt.

A black heart pour. Dark days indeed. A tan fedora to complete this Zoot Suit stout. Looking sharp. An aroma of roasted malt, heavy on the cocoa, maybe not loco cocoa but mucho macho cocoa don’t you know.  First swig confirmed that the nose knows. A full slightly bitter roasted malt with a sweet disposition.  An espresso finish which is a bit harsh, not a reprimand more like a reminder, but not what I would call easy.  Full flavour smooth body cocoa with coffee bitters backend.  The slightly harsh dry finish is mellowing a bit and the sweet steps up to take the limelight. This brew reminds me of our editor, slightly unbalanced and harsh at times, otherwise a standard stout.

*Editor’s Comment: Once Warner Brothers transferred some songs to Elektra to issue the 1976 Eagles Greatest Hits album which sold 27 million copies, Browne wasn’t taking it easy anymore. Browne (Take It Easy), J.D. Souther (Best of My Love) and Jack Tempchin (Peaceful Easy Feeling and Already Gone) sued Warner Brothers for $10M plus. The suit was settled in 2002 for an undisclosed amount. Souther also co-wrote a number of other Eagles songs including “Heartache Tonight” and “New Kid in Town”.

**Editor’s Comment: Speakeasies were bars where alcohol is illegally sold. The classic image comes from the prohibition era in the USA from 1920 to 1933.
