At Sawdust City today for lunch on the patio and I walk up to the bar and ask what’s new. “There is a Q” the bartender says. I apologized, as I am not one to jump the line, even though I didn’t see anyone in front of me. She said, “No, not a line up, Q is an amber lager we just released.” Well that was much better news then lining up for a beer like at a wedding reception open bar. And more good news, an amber lager brewed for the summer. You see I love me an amber, but I usually save them for cooler nights and hockey season so a summer amber was an easy choice for me.
But Q? What kind of a name is that? My first thought was Q from all those James Bond flicks ,27 Bond movies, Q was in 24 of them. Q, the Quartermaster, providing Bond with all kinds of high-tech gadgets, which today most teenagers have on their smart phones. Q is helping Bond battle SPECTRE * or whichever super villain was planning to destroy the world for no good reason. By the way, you can’t really call Bond a secret agent can you. Everyone in the world has seen a James Bond movie, and besides that he always introduces himself as “Bond, James Bond.” He says Bond twice in case you are hard of hearing. Not exactly a low-profile introvert.
But there is a Queen card on the can which didn’t seem to have anything to do with Bond. And something is amiss with that card, it is the queen of both hearts and diamonds. That card needs to be dealt with.**
It turns out that Sawdust City Brewing is in collaboration with Muskoka Pride on this brew in support of the local pride community***. I remember Gateway had a similar collaboration. Coincidentally at lunch I was talking with Ted from the Beer Store and Jake from Sawdust about the great diversity and inclusion programs that both of their organizations have, which brought to mind the work of Brave Noise. Good food, good company, and good beer made for a great lunch.
How about Q? It is a nice golden amber pour, malt aroma. A nice mouthfeel and great flavour. Smooth, easy drinking, a bit lighter flavour than a traditional amber which made it a great fit for partaking in a pleasantly pleasing pint on the patio. Sawdust achieved their goal, Q is a nice summer amber. And there was still no line up when I went up for Q number 2. Well done Sawdust.
