Seagull Suds and the Pursuit of Hoppiness

Hoppy Seagull

Burlington Brewery

5.3% Alcohol

This calls for a little taste bud stimulation.

An auto -biography of a seagull in his pursuit of happiness,* what will they think of next?  How about Big Bird’s biography “It’s Not Easy Being Yellow Either”. Or Tweety Bird’s expose of the film industry “I Did! I Did Taw an Oscar“.** My personal favourite seagull is Scuttle with the voice of the great Buddy Hackett, “this calls for a little vocal romantic stimulation.” Classic.

How about this Hoppy Seagull from sea-side Burlington. Do we have another classic seagull on our hands? The can says Indian Pale Ale, as far as I am concerned you can call it whatever you want as long as it’s cold, fresh and in my glass. It pours fairly clear and golden, with a surf’s up foam top. Nice looking pour.

Not much fruit on the nose. Hops yes, fruit no. First taste is high octane hoppiness, paint remover grade! I was looking for a 100 IBU on the can, not 41. There is nice stone fruit backdrop to the full hops assault. The hops are front, center and don’t stop there but linger in the aftertaste too.  It sure is hoppy, and maybe not for everyone, but I’m enjoying it. Old school hop forward, I’m dancing with Danny and the Juniors on this one.***

Jonathan Livingston lost control at first but then learned to control and enjoy the high speeds. Just like JLS, at first this brew seems over the top hops, but it seems to come into it’s own and eventually embraces the hops, and so did I. If you like it hoppy, this one will make you happy.

*Editor’s Comment: “Johnathan Livingston Seagull” is the 1970 auto-biography of Jonathan Seagull, ghost written by Richard Bach. A number 1 bestseller, it has been described as a “timeless spiritual classic”. It is a quick and thought provoking read, I would highly recommend it.

**Editor’s Comment: The first cartoon to team up Tweety Bird and Sylvester was the 1947 cartoon “Tweetie Pie” with the legendary Mel Blanc voicing the speech impeded bird. It won Warner Brothers it’s first academy award for Best Short Subject Cartoon.

***Editor’s Comment: Danny and the Juniors released their number 1 hit single “At the Hop” in 1957. Originally the song was “Let’s Do the Bop”, Dick Clark heard the song and suggested they change the lyrics to “let’s go to the Hop”, and the rest is history.
