So Fine To Me Too

Hoyne Pilsner

Hoyne Brewing Co.

5.3% Alcohol

Some day drinking on a Thursday. You guessed it, time for another edition of the COMDB & Crownsmen Show. Jerrod’s top 5 list was the top 5 Crownsmen shows. Upon review it was determined that most important factor in terms of viewer numbers and engagement was facial hair, on either the host or the guests. A trend that we decided was definitely causal not coincidental.

Rory’s big deal of the day was the proposed merger of equals, Anglo American and Teck. We determined that the merger participants did not appear all that equal which seemed to be a suitable segue into my topic, a merger of unequals discussion, that being the COMDB Marriage Survival Guide.

Our liquid courage for this show was a Hoyne Pilsner from the far Western Island city of Victoria BC. Sean Hoyne’s poetic words, which seem so inspirational, dare I say romantic, on the can, sounded stalker worthy and just plain creepy when Rory read them aloud. *

I couldn’t have said it better myself, and neither could Rory.

Despite that somewhat disturbing introduction, this brew looked stunning in my pils glass, clear and golden with a few tiny bubbles making their way to surface to join the pretty near perfect head of Hoyne.

This pilsner, which is of course a lager, has a great malt body and retains that lager sweet disposition that so many pils leave by the wayside. A classic pils finish, dry and crisp but not acerbic, and that’s it that’s all. Balanced, great flavour and a nice lager to pils sequence without a bitter ending.

The voting on this one was not unanimous. Rory was dismissive, even derisive, of this brew, which led us to believe that once again he hadn’t washed his PetroCan travel cup before the show. Jerrod liked it and restated his ardent desire to drink larger beers or more beers on the show. When all is said and done, we know more is usually said then done, particularly on this show.  But when the brew du jour is done and dusted, and it comes to how this beer has done, I have the final say. And I would have to agree with Sean’s sweetie, It was so fine to me as well. And I’m sure Sean is a great guy, but just to be crystal clear, I am talking about the beer.

*Editor’s Comment: According to Sean Hoyne “On the third night I handed my sweetie a Pilsner. Perfectly poured. While holding it up and gazing at it, or through it at me, she said softly “you are so fine to me”. It was hard to tell if she meant to be heard. “Ambiguity, thy Name is Woman”, I nearly uttered. Whether she was speaking to me, or to the beer, it was merely semantics. The deal was sealed. I would make it my life’s work to make fine beer”.
