Something in the Water For Sure

Hazy Maitland IPA

Something in the Water Brewing Co.

6.5% Alcohol

Classic

As a fisherman, I totally get Captain Ahab’s obsession with Moby Dick, or Santiago’s dogged resolve in bringing in that giant marlin.* There is something in the water for sure and once the ice is out there will be two things in the water. My line and that lunker pickerel that put my 12 lb test line to the test last year. He won the first battle but the war ain’t over yet.

They tell us that the muddy Maitland is a hazy and dank river up around where the Something in the Water kids played. It empties into the Huron at the salt mining town of Goderich. It is said that Queen Elizabeth herself once proclaimed Goderich the “prettiest town in Canada”.** So this brew is named after the Maitland, the dank and hazy part that is, not the prettiest in Canada part.

Well, whatever is in the water sure likes to bubble up a healthy hoppy heaping helping of head. To the top, convex and vexing. I needed the patience and perseverance of good old Santiago to wait for this froth to blow off. How could such a little can produce so much foam?  It’s no Goodbye Gravity but it reminded me of that foam fest fiasco.

As you may have guessed this hazy river brew pours proud, with head held high. NBA style head, above the rim. Half a glass of mellow yellow haze, half a glass of bright white. A juicy very hoppy aroma, smells good. And finally a taste, and it’s hoppy and tropical juicy and tasty, a spicy hoppy bordering on tart. And fizzy for sure, not really a surprise with what was going on topside. Hops and juice are in balance, sure it’s fizzy but not too much. More hoppy bitters coming in at the finish line with a grapefruit aftertaste. All in all an enjoyable hoppy IPA. Not sure where all the foam came from, maybe there is something in the water?

*Editor’s Comment: In Hemingway’s 1952 novella, “The Old Man and the Sea”, an old Cuban fisherman, Santiago, carries out a 3 day epic battle with a giant marlin. The book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for literature and was instrumental in Hemingway winning the Nobel prize for literature. It is a modern classic and a great read.

**Editor’s Comment: The Queen may well have made that statement but apparently there is no record that she ever visited Goderich.
