Spent the Night in Amarillo with an Armadillo

Amarillo SMASH

Kame & Kettle Beer Works

5.1% Alcohol

A souvenir of Amarillo, Texas.

Amarillo by mornin’, Amarillo’s on my mind.” * George Strait had a one-track mind when it came to Amarillo, that Bible belt rodeo ridin’ region of the North Texas panhandle. Not to be confused with Miranda Lambert’s song “Armadillo from Amarillo”. “I met an armadillo from Amarillo and he asked me for a light. The armadillo with a doobie and a coldie in a koozie, Honey you can’t make this shit up.

But Kame & Kettle’s single malt and single hop (SMASH) is an amarillo creation as opposed to an armadillo fabrication, out of Fonthill, not boot hill. ** Glad we got that cleared up.

Amarillo Smash wasn’t one at the COMDB AGM.*** However all AGM reviews are suspect, and often without an alibi. So I’ve taken it upon myself to do an official review of this auspicious brew.

A very clear golden pour, somewhat obscured by the frosty stein it resides in. A nice frothy headline  with a light malt aroma and a touch of fruit to boot. The first taste is fresh light fruit and major ale bitters all squeezed together with about as much harmony as a kazoo at the opera. We are talking big yellow (not ruby red) grapefruit growing on a pine tree bitters, bitters squared.  Mild fruit, major bitters, as balanced as the national budget. I think you get the picture, bitter. A salty snack and a couple more pulls on the pint reduce the bitterness, but it’s still the front and center feature attraction.  At first off-putting, this brew kinda grows on you although you might need more than one to grow on you enough.

Tastebuds smashed but it’s a one and done tasting so I wasn’t.  It turns out that 5 cranky old men got this review dead to rights. AGM findings conspicuously and conveniently confirmed.

*Editor’s Comment: “Amarillo by Morning” is a song written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser. Stafford first recorded it in 1973 but George Strait had a number 1 country hit with it in 1982. In 2024 Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song number 10 of the top 200 country songs of all time. Broken bones, divorce, bankruptcy, but at least he’s free to ride in the rodeo. That’s a country classic. Miranda Lambert’s 2024 song “Armadillo” was written by Aaron Raitiere, Jon Decious and Parker Tworney, about pickin’ up a giant pot smoking beer drinking hitchhiking armadillo as an explanation of where the singer was last night. As of yet Rolling Stone has not ranked this onein the top 200.

**Editor’s Comment: Kame & Kettle are using amarillo hops in this brew. As for Boot Hill, it's in Tombstone Arizona, about an 11 hour drive from Amarillo Texas. If you left after a rodeo in Tombstone you could be in Amarillo by morning.

***Editor’s Comment: At the 4th COMDB AGM Amarillo Smash received an averaged 12.33 out of 20 rating.

Final Rating: Lost Somewhere in the Vicinity of Amarillo at 12.33 out of 20
