The COMDB River Hymnal

River Hymnal

Dominion Brewing Co.

6.5% Alcohol

Taylor is all grown up now. She’s not looking for the Grinch these days, but is heading down to the river to avoid the Devil.

Taylor Momsen was river bound and for good reason. “I’m going back to the river, Where the devil can’t find me.” The Boss went down there even though he knew that the river was dry. Meanwhile Tina made the keen observation that the river was deep while the mountain was high. And Mark Knopfler picked up a bottle in another sorry river town.* That sums up the COMDB River Hymnal. I would have to check with the Department of Morality for some more traditional hymns on the topic. **

As for this River Hymnal, it’s source is not a mountain stream or a church for that matter, but a capital idea from Dominion City. Right out of Ottawa, JF’s stomping ground. The very same JF who once said “the beer is the journey” which seemed to capsulize, crystallize and epitomize the COMDB philosophy.

Will we be worshipping this beer or just singing the blues? Time to pour a rousing chorus of River Hymnal.

Golden, somewhat hazy but not thick. A respectful head choir master. A hoppy aroma with lots of citrus fruit, almost tangy on the nose.  Great tropical and citrus flavour with a hoppy full mouthfeel and a malt backbone. A crisp grapefruit bitters finish. Harmonious, as in well balanced. Like Dominion’s Shape of Home Pale Ale, this brew is shaping up to be a classic too.  A great take on the old school West coast IPAs. Looks like we are singing this beer’s praises.  Well done Dominion.

*Editor’s Comment: We were first introduced to Taylor Momsen when she was 7 years old, portraying Cindy Lou Who in the year 2000 movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” where she held her own opposite Jim Carrey’s outlandish portrayal of the green grouch. These days Taylor fronts a hard rock band known as The Pretty Reckless. The lyric is from Momsen’s 2016 song “Back to the River”. Bruce Springsteen’s 1981 song and album “The River”. “River Deep, Mountain High” was a Phil Spector song that Tina Turner made her own. And Mark Knopfler’s 2015 song “River Towns” was inspired by the short story “A Room Forever” by Breece D’J Pancake which was published only a few weeks before his suicide in 1979.

**Editor’s Comment: “Shall We Gather at the River” is an traditional hymn written in 1864 by Robert Lowry. Lowry is hoping to “Gather with the saints at the river.”
