The Shape I’m In

Shape of Home

Dominion City Brewery

4.5% Alcohol

Hey, wait a minute, it is the shape of a home isn’t it.

Dorthy felt there was no place like it, Pliny the Elder thought it is where the heart is, and Leone Redbone will tell you it’s where you hang your hat.* We’re talking about home of course. As for the shape of home, it’s a pentagon.** Any baseball fan will tell you that. What it has to do with this Pale Ale from Dominion City is anybody’s guess. Me, I’m just here for the beer.

This brew has left the can and found a new home in the shape of my IPA glass, which it fills quite nicely. It has a light golden almost lemony glow to it, a bit bubbly, and with a frothy hop top. A hoppy fresh smell, nice on the nose. First taste is hoppy fresh pine bitters upfront with a stone fruit front to follow, contrary to the usual sequence of events but it works quite well. A little bit of fuzz on the peach. Now it’s all blending together for a great stone tropical fruit hop fest. A soft mouthfeel enhances the experience. It is way up there on the pale ale scale, great beer.

Whether you drink this at home or somewhere else, and regardless of what shape you’re in when you get home, you won’t go wrong by ordering one of these tasty pale ales.

*Editor’s Comment: In Frank Baum’s book “The Wizard of Oz” Dorthy famously says “There is no place like home.” Pliny the Elder (27 -79 AD) was a Roman Naval Commander and is generally credited with saying “home is where the heart is”. Leone Redbone the musician, is credited with the saying “home is where you hang your hat”.

**Editor’s Comment: The original shape of home in baseball in the 1800’s was a circle, made of marble stone or glass, which may have been where the name “plate” instead of home base derived from. In 1899 the rules changed requiring home plate to be square like the other bases. However the orientation was with a corner of the square pointed at the pitcher and one at the batter, so the strike zone was indicated by the points of the plate (base). In its current version the pentagon with its apex pointing to the pitcher better defines the strike zone. Today the plate is made of rubber making it less dangerous to anyone sliding into home.
