I can parle vous un peu, but if I don’t ask the COMDB translation department to translate for me, you would think it’s the end of the world. They get in a huff and the next time I have a Spanish or German beer I’m pas de chance. It turns out “La Fin du Monde” is the end of the world, as we know it anyway. Our belle province brewer Unibroue * tell us that this is a tribute to Quebec which when the French explorers got there “they thought they had reached the end of the world.” That could be interpreted a few ways, let’s go with the rugged beauty one.
Tripel,** the Belgium brewer’s equivalent of a XXX movie. There should be a mature audience only warning on this 9% high and mighty eXXXtra strong Belgium style blonde. Our first encounter with Unibroue was their Blanche de Chambly which didn’t go well. Our previous Tripel sampling was interesting but not a super suds sampling to say the least. It is a unique style that is not for everybody. Concerned and yet curious, I lit a fire and settled into the rocker for a Sunday night sampling.
This Belgian heavyweight poured golden and hazy, cozy by the fire, the fine wisps of foam unable to contain the high ABV. Let’s hope I can. A creamy sweet wheat aroma, a Belgian for sure. And the first taste is a XXX boozy creamy sweet with a full mouthfeel and some spices in there too. As rich and complex as Musk (the billionaire not the scent). A slow sipper for sure. As it evolves or I succumb, or maybe a bit of both, it transitions into a strong slightly sweet creamy pale ale, with some spices in the background. I didn’t detect any hops or bitters, I think the strong ABV finish may mask any of that. Apart from the strength it is balanced.
When I started this beer I was a bit worried about the end of the world, but by the time I was half way through I found my concerns about global demise not only unproductive but unwarranted. A slow and steady sipper by the fire, it ended up being a pleasant experience.
