The Forecast Calls for a Cold Weather Lager

Distant Lights

Dominion City Brewing Co.

5% Alcohol

Back in the day a cold weather lager for us was a Molson Diamond or Brador in February in the field before the high school dance.* Finish it before it freezes. A Deep Purple cover band, with maybe some smoke too, but not on the water.

But this Dominion City throwback is none of the above. It may be cold outside but at the Master Brewers Association of Americas conference ** everything is cool. Chilled beer and chill delegates, knowledge sharing is caring and the craft brewers are “elevating expertise and mastering the art of brewing”. Case in point, this craft lager from Dominion City.

An amber clear pour with a white to tan foam topper, it’s doing a pretty damn good amber impersonation if you ask me. Or maybe Vienna’s calling? A malt aroma with some graininess on the nose as well. A full flavoured malt lager, touch of sweet and some slight back end bitters. Sequence and balance, check and check. A classic craft lager, in that it has more of everything than its pale by comparison big brewer cousins.

They say it’s “snug and toasty” I say it’s hale and hearty, and it appears we’re both correct.

*Editor’s Comment: Molson Brador was a Quebec produced higher ABV 6.2% lager that came out in the early 70’s and was discontinued around 2005. In those days it was consumed for effect, not taste.

**Editor's Comment: The 51st annual Master Brewers Association of Americas Ontario Division conference is being held this week in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
