The Mexican

Cairn Marker

Gateway City Brewery

In one of the odder Hollywood castings Charlton Heston plays the Mexican lead in the 1958 Orson Welles movie “Touch of Evil”. * Perhaps I was thinking of this while opening a Mexican lager from a North Bay brewer, an odd pairing as well?

Much closer to their home, Gateway City has once again named their brew after a local North Bay landmark, the mysterious cairn marker. ** On the beer can the cairn marker takes on the look of an Aztec pyramid while the half raven half human being provides a corn stalk as an offering, with the fields of golden corn, partly harvested, in the background.

To get right to the point, this beer has flaked corn in it, which is why it is called Mexican. It may have corn in it, but is it a maizing?***  We shall see.

A clear dark amber pour (have I ever mentioned I love me an amber) with a nice healthy looking bright white head. It has a low profile roasted malt aroma with a tinny tinge to it (unintentional alliteration).  A smooth light amber flavour with a watery mouthfeel and a slick crisp finish. A great combination for a mild easy drinking crisp amber that could be a by the fire game watching brew or a hot day thirst quencher too. Well done, Gateway.

*Editor’s Comment: A complicated film noir loosely based on the Whit Masterson* novel Badge of Evil. The film was originally poorly received but in more recent years has been recognized as a classic. In addition to Heston and Welles, the all-star cast included Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Dennis Weaver and Zsa Zsa Gabor. * Editor’s Comment on His Previous Comment: Whit Masterson was a pen name for a partnership of two American authors, Robert Allison Wade and H. Bill Miller. Together they wrote more than 30 novels. Several were adapted into film.

**Editor’s Comment: Apparently the cairn marker in North Bay is the only one standing of four original pillars that were boundary markers of the Ferguson land claim.

***Editor’s Comment: A corny pun.
