The Sights and Sounds…and Noise of Christmas

Sol Juice

Skeleton Park Brewery

6% Alcohol

To quote a famous Doctor regarding Christmas “And then! Oh, the noise! Oh, the Noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!”  Dr. Suess was probably a cranky old man at heart since he said he thought of the Grinch character while looking in the mirror and dismaying about the commercialization of Christmas on December 26th, 1954.

Winter Reality

Back to present day and after the all the Pokémons and Squishables and Teckdecks and Hatchimals and crafts and toys that require Gramps (affectionately known as Grumps today)  to make a mad dash to the 7/11 for a Christmas day one time only multiple inflationary price for double and triple A’s, it was time to escape reality. So rather than a Christmasy quaff I elected to go summertime with an old school IPA. I am assuming hoping this “Sol Juice” IPA  is the Spanish Translation “Sun Juice”.* Skeleton Park** tell us that this brew is a thirst quencher for the warm and sunny summertime season. Perfect, that’s exactly where I want to escape to for an hour this evening! No noise except for the waves on the shore.

By the way, Skeleton Park Brewery hails from the Limestone City, Kingston, where a few of the COM did some damage** back in the day. Back when the Royal served draft by the tray full, Ports for quarts, and the Prince George was still “downtown” before it went “uptown”*** although it has always been located downtown, if you know what I mean.

Summertime Escape for an Hour

Sunday night football and basketball on the tube with my smokehouse almonds, a Christmas gift for the cranky old man who has everything except smokehouse almonds, and a bright sunny IPA.  The snowstorm is melting into a summer by the lake as I partake. Which reminds me, there is a brew to review.

A bright sunshine orange warm day slightly hazy pour with a thin trim whitecap lakeside. An aroma with hops and fruit in moderation, perhaps some grapefruit zing bringing up the rear. An ol’ school IPA. What a swig reveals is citrus tropical fruit for sure, but it’s not hoppy or bitter or zingy, but a bit of funky malt on the finish. The smokehouse almonds turn out to be the perfect pairing, good call by the missus! This brew is tropical juicy with a mild smooth finish, no zing and the funk has left the station. After a few high octane stouts a nice juicy summertime IPA hit the spot.

Just what the good Doctor ordered.

*Editor’s Comment: As opposed to the acronym SOL (shit out of luck) or a French translation “Floor Juice”. Sol could also refer to the fifth note of the major scale, or a French or Peruvian coin, or a fluid colloidal system, or the Roman God of the sun. Most likely it’s the sun thing.

**Editor’s Comment: To yourselves.

***Editor’s Comment: “Downtown Came Uptown for You” is a song by David Wilcox from his 1983 album “My Eyes Keep Me in Trouble”. Wilcox played at the Prince George on occasion, and in those days he was definitely “downtown”.
