Good old Theodor Geisel was looking in the mirror on December 26th 1956 when he came up with the Grinch. He was also known to have a drink every now and then. Sounds like he was well qualified to be a member of the cranky old men club. *

I was having a beer with RA at the Ports not long ago and he said he had tried a Gose beer, or maybe he said a gross beer, no, it was a gross Gose beer. He didn’t finish it! Not a good testimonial to the genre. I’ve never once heard one of the COM say “I’m in the mood for a cherry lime Gose”.

But I’m a Trestle fan, them being from Bobby Orr’s hometown and all, and the purveyors of some tasty pints too. And The Grinch is my favourite Christmas book, and the original cartoon my favourite Christmas show. Boris Karloff nails it as the grinchiest grinch ever, sorry Jim, but it’s true.**

So my concern over a cherry lime Gose (what were they thinking?), coupled with my past positive pints from Trestle and my love of the grinch, were all generating mixed feelings about this brew review. I puzzled this pint till my puzzler was sore, the only thing left was to pour and score.

Looks like The Grinch isn’t too impressed either.

A bright Grinch eyed red, with no snow cover at all on this Mt. Crumpet. The aroma is not surprisingly lime cherry soda. My first thought was I’ll be taking one for the team here. First taste is lotsa lime tart and cherry sweet with a touch of salt, maybe not as sour as the Grinch, but not far off. A salty snack was required to carry on. Not exactly creamy but not thin either, it’s approaching a full mouthfeel. Consistent start to finish and the lime cherry tart that started out as unique and different got tired very quickly.

Kudos to Trestle for trying something unique, but the combination just didn’t work for me. Unfortunately there is no “Fahoo Fores, Dahoo Dores”, chorus to this tasting. The tears were not tears of joy.

Suess was The GOAT!

*Editor’s Comment: Theodor Geisle, better known to us as Dr. Suess, wrote How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 1957 when he was 53 years old. A bit young for a cranky old man. As for the occasional drink, during his school years at Dartmouth, which was also during the Prohibition, him and some friends were caught drinking and were punished for their indulgences. He also illustrated ads for beer companies like Schaefer and Narragansett.

**Editor’s Comment: When Chuck Jones approached Suess with the idea to make a TV special he was reluctant at first but eventually bought in. They both wanted Karloff as the narrator and the voice of the Grinch. Karloff was a long-term fan of Dr, Suess and was eager to play the part. Karloff was the only voice actor credited on the1966 show. which has become a holiday classic. Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice of Tony the Tiger for five decades in the cereal commercials (They’re Great!), sang the song “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”.
