I’m a big Gateway City fan. Their beers, the pinball machines, the local references, all very good, usually. I can remember driving by City Bakery* back in the day and the aroma of Aunt May’s fresh baked bread wafting on the wind was something special. So this new GC offering named after a beloved bakery’s bread, with a healthy and hearty harvest of barley, corn, oats, rye and wheat, sounded to me like something I could toast. As is sometimes the case, this was not the case.
The pour was the first sign of things to come. Golden for sure, but as hazy as an Oktoberfest memory, which wasn’t what I was expecting from a golden ale. Looked like a hazy IPA. The aroma also set me back a bit, a bit of a tang to it, reminded me of a sour. Maybe a case of mistaken identity or a can of it anyway?
The taste was very light flat and not much of anything to write home or a review about. No ale bitters, malt or sweet. This brew was definitely off, not as advertised or planned. My first thought was maybe a micro brew because it was so light on everything, but no, it sports a healthy 5.5% in the ABV department. Off but not off, a confusing brew that had me more confused than usual. ** I don’t know about any multigrain constituents; it seems like a stale one grain of something brew.
I picked it up a few weeks ago directly from the brewery but checked the date anyway, and it’s only 3 months old. Where’s my beer, cause it ain’t here. This no grain ale is ailing.
