This Porter Carries the Day

Muddy York Porter

Muddy York Brewing Co.

4.7% Alcohol

The emaciated gentlemen on the can Is, I assume, an 18th century porter in the flesh, or not as the case may be. Long gone, but certainly not forgotten by the master malters and millers at Muddy York who have brewed this porter as a tribute to those porters and dock workers of centuries gone by.*

When it comes to a porter, I love me a good one, bad ones not so much.  We’ve sampled a few of them but they still seem to be a rare find these days.** We enjoyed Muddy York’s Dara stout, so I was looking forward to their porter to “carry” on their distinguished dark brew super suds tradition.

A deep dark pour, not quite black but certainly as deep as my glass at least. It has bright white a paper cut thin head, no tan lines here. The roasted malt cocoa aroma smells absolutely fantabulous (yes, that’s a real word). *** The taste is not as cocoa loco as the aroma, more balanced. It has a light mouthfeel with a great roast malt subtle cocoa combo. That all leads to a dry, satisfying, finish. Full flavoured yet light and easy drinking. This porter may not be carrying any luggage, but it did carry the day.

*Editor’s Comment: There are still porters working on Mackinac Island who will take your luggage on their bicycles (no cars are allowed on the island) from the ferry dock to the Grand Hotel.

**Editor’s Comment: 37 to date including this one. Only 2.3% of the COMDB brew reviews to date are Porters.

***Editor’s Comment: Fantabulous is a word found in the Oxford Dictionary and an acceptable Scrabble play. It is an informal portmanteau of “fabulous” and “fantastic”.
