In doing these beer reviews I have been to Helles and bock. Amster-damn helles, big rock bock helles. By day visiting the sun gods and at night by the gaslight, and all points in between. I think it was Winston Churchill who said “If you find yourself drinking a Helles, just keep going.”* Silversmith wowed us with their black lager, so tonight, after fishing I fancied a flagon of a Silversmith forged floral refresh. Their Helles Lager that is. This pale lager is at the lighter end of the spectrum shade wise, let’s see how it fairs in a quaff and tell.
A hoppy happy hearty head and a not so pale but healthy-looking shade of a golden beach tan. A great looking pour. The Police’s “Message in a Bottle” comes on the radio, seems to be a fitting beer tasting tune. Mild malt aroma with a floral flourish. A tasty malt body with a floral arrangement but it’s a celebration lei, not a celebration of life wreath. Some 60s flower power in this brew. Malt with a floral touch and a crisp finish and some bitters. The bitters settle for less but the florals stay the course. Busy but I wouldn’t call it complex, I would (and just did) call it balanced. When it comes to a Helles style, the word classic comes to mind. A refreshing easy laid back lager. I’m usually not fond of flora but this one works for me.
