I have a passing knowledge of French (I passed grade 10 French) and a tropical lake sounds a lot more inviting than the lake I’m looking at right now which is frozen as stiff as a stone statue. And believe me, decorum prevented me from using some less suitable similes that came to mind. When it comes to this brew, I doubt that the tropical Lake (Lac) in question is Lake (Lac) Chambly, by the town of Chambly in Quebec, where Unibroue brews their brews.
We have sampled Unibroue’s famous (or infamous) 9% Tripel La Fin du Monde, a multiple award winner but perhaps a bit too esoteric for our cranky old taste buds. This brew appears to be a little more down to earth than the end of the world.
A layered pour, light golden bottom, to dark orange middle with a foamy surfs up white head and bubbly. An aroma of hop malt tropical fruit, a little bit of everything coming at me at once. The taste is definitely tropical, pineapple mango citrus. Surprisingly sweet and also not as bitter/hoppy as I thought it would be with a 55 IBU. Light sweet juicy not very hoppy with just a mild bitter combining with a sweet juice finish. It is bubbly in the glass but not really fizzy to the taste. It settles into a nice traditional juicy NEIPA.
