Breaking news! Lake of Bays (Baysville) and Sawdust City (Gravenhurst) are merging, along with Merit Brewing (Hamilton) in what will become one of the top ten brewers in the province. OK, maybe not as exciting as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce secretly getting married last night (shameless use of fake news to get your attention and to make a point), but for us COM who hold LoB and SC in high regard, it is noteworthy, dammit. Another not so subtle but oh so smooth segue if I do say so myself.
What could be more Canadian than Twiggz (with a Zed not a Zee), the cranky old beaver, with one elbow up and brewksi in paw, saying dammit? ** Ok, I’m sure there are a few things that could possibly be more Canadian. Time to pop the top on this Lake of Bays light IPA and see just how Canadian it is.

Pour 1, meet Pour 2
This evening boathouse refreshment is a tale of two pours. In a glass too small for the whole beer it was clear at first light then hazy by the second half. Sounds like I’m drinking curious again. Watery mild citrus juicy flat aroma, is followed by a similar first quaff. Watery light citrus fruit with a flat fizz finish and a very mild bitter aftertaste. Easy drinkin’, it’s goin’ down like a chump change challenger. Eventually the juice came out on top with some mild hoppy bitters while the fizz faded like a barber shop magazine. It all came together nicely, exactly what I would expect and hope for in an IPA light.
I probably could have used a higher ABV last night, but for Twiggz a light IPA might have been just the ticket. ***
*Editor’s Comment: On June 10th, 2025 it was announced that Lake of Bays and Merit, who had previously merged, would be merging with Sawdust City. The new combined group will have over 2 million litres of production annually, and over 200 employees.
**Editor’s Comment: How about a moose, a bear and a Mountie having a coffee and a donut at Timmies after a game of pond hockey by an igloo?
**Reviewer’s Comment: Ok you got me there.
***Editor’s Comment: The male adult beaver has a weight in the range of 35 to 50 pounds so a 4% light beer may be more his speed. Doing some quick math the equivalent for our Reviewer would be at least a 16% not so light beer.
