Apparently “Van Life” is a thing, that thing being living in your van. I thought that was just an initial stage in the career of every country and western singer, but some people actually live in their van by choice. I did a bit of research and as you can imagine, van life isn’t all picturesque sunsets over the desert or awakening to the sound of a babbling brook. There are some drawbacks.

Here are some van life truths every wanna be van lifer should know.

1.Make sure the toilet in the van is depressurized before you open it.

2.You will concuss yourself on the overhead cabinets, more than once.

3.Not all Walmarts allow parking lot camping.

4.Not all truck stop showers are created equal.

Van life circa 1969

I’ve never owned a van, camped in a van or rode to Woodstock in one, and you may not be surprised to know that none of those items are on my bucket list. But perhaps a more sedentary, and sanitary, way to experience Van Life is by quaffing this Bench Mexican style lager, don’t mind if I do.

A bright golden pour, effervescent with bubbles culminating is a thin foamy head. Can I smell the corn in the malt, or is it all in my head? First taste is malt with a sharp grainy corn slightly sweet, with some hoppy fruit that at first comes off like a touch of wine. Bench is the brewer from wine country after all. Complex for a lager of any style. No it’s not wine, it’s lime. Busy but balanced and no one flavour overpowering the next.

A light refreshing lager, a bit busy, a tad confusing at times but like the Bard said, “all’s well that ends well”. *

*Editor’s Comment: The end of Shakespeare’s 1623 play All’s Well That Ends Well has Helena, who was thought to be dead, dramatically reappear, quite alive, and also quite pregnant. Bertram is pardoned by the King, and it would seem that Bertram and Helena will live happily ever after, although we all know how that sometimes goes.
