Living the Van life and loving it. No, I’m not living in a van. It’s just another stop on the COM Vancouver brew tour and I’m at a fancy pants dining establishment that those of us in the know refer to as “The Club”. Actually, everyone calls it that because that’s its name, The Cactus Club, and for some reason as soon as I got there I was as dry as a sea salt desert. The server’s question “drinks anyone” is always rhetorical in my case.

They were serving Four Winds, that sounded like a breath of fresh air to me. I looked for a Four Strong Winds on the menu, no such luck. I guess I’d have to go to Calgary for that. * But a frosty cold pilsner was just the ticket for my cacti dry condition.

Bottle served and poured, a light golden glow.  Mild malt and a touch of citrus aroma. The taste is a classic pils, mild malt to a dry crisp acerbic Saaz finish, with a touch of citrus. But this is a West Coast pilsner by virtue of location only, there isn’t enough juice in it to join the genre. Thirst sated, abated and irradicated in that order.

A solid Saaz style pils, Czech that box.

*Editor’s Comment: “Think I'll go out to Alberta, weather's good there in the fall.” Four Strong Winds is a 1962 folk song written by Ian Tyson and preformed by Ian & Sylvia. It has been covered by many artists and is a Neil Young favourite. It is considered the unofficial anthem of the province of Alberta.
