Veer Hazy IPA

Muskoka Brewery

Less than 0.5% Alcohol

Muskoka had us take a Detour before, a light session IPA that garnered mixed reviews. But if you think a session IPA is off the beaten track, Muskoka is about to veer to the far left (ABV content as opposed to any implied political leanings) with their non-alcoholic Veer Hazy IPA. “Embark on a new direction” they tell us. I guess the new direction they’re referring to is sobriety?  Well, I’ve been there done that, but I lost the t-shirt sometime ago and I’m not in the market for a new one.

My astute much better half, the Missus who seldom misses a thing, * once asked me “why would anyone drink a non-alcoholic beer?”  A fair enough question to which I had no reasonable response.

But as a professional beer taster, a sommelier of the suds so to speak, I do at times sample brews that are not what I would call my go tos. As far as non-alcoholic beers go, thank goodness for spell check because for some reason I can never type the word non-alcoholic correctly no matter how slowly I type, even when I’m typing with one finger instead of two. Is there some sort of Freudian typecasting going on here?

It seems like I’m delaying the inevitable, that being the ongoing COMDB zero-percent experiment. They tell us that this brew has “less than 0.5% ABV”. Seems a bit non-committal to me but unlike the Government tax auditors, I’m not one to quibble over 0.5% one way or the other.

A bright light golden pour, with about as much head as it has alcohol. ** It has a nice mild tropical juice aroma to it, but upon second sniff it seemed to evaporate right under my nose. First taste is mild tropical juice, watery mouthfeel, with a bit of a metallic off taste on the finish. The juice was up and down like a yo-yo on a Ferris wheel but never much at all even when it was there.  Unfortunately it has that off taste on the finish that so many zeroes posses.

They tell us that when you drink this Veer  beer you can “enjoy life’s adventures with no limits”. Maybe next time I’ll drink a beer with a substantial amount of alcohol in it and enjoy life’s adventures with a few reasonable limits.

*Editor’s Comment: Which begs the question, why did she pick you?

**Editor’s Comment: Interesting, perhaps even telling, that you struggle spelling the word “non-alcoholic” but seem to have no problem spelling the word “alcohol”.
