Bruce, the star of Jaws

In 1975 fear had gripped the nation. When the movie Jaws came out they told us that after watching the movie “you’ll never go in the water again”. Not since the shower scene from Psycho had a movie ever created such a personal hygiene issue for the general public. * But we survived Jaws, and just when we thought it was safe to go back in the water, there was Jaws 2. Jaws 3-D had us stylin’ in those plastic glasses, and Jaws:The Revenge had us fairly certain (and very hopeful) there would be no sequel. The 5th sequel, Cruel Jaws, was aptly named. ** But all 5 of these cinematic adventures had one thing in common. The star of the show was something in the water! How’s that for a smooth as silk segue.

And our favourite fishman brewer, Something in the Water, is the headliner of this review, with their Shake the Dust. And they are shaking much more than just dust with this “hop saturated ale”, a double IPA well qualified for the curious craft category.

A thick no pulp OJ pour, with an adequate amount of foam to make for a blow off quaff. A thick (can something smell thick?) tropical juicy and heavy on the hops aroma. First taste is a creamy, very mango tango tropical juicy body with big time hoppy bitters, followed by a juicy aftertaste going to dry mouthfeel… rinse and repeat. Wow, that’s sooo tasty. The big time juice balances with some big bad (as in good) hops. Every bit a double and then some, this one is all about giving your taste buds a workout. It stays steady, strong, and balanced. A daring and dauntless double that grabbed my attention from first sniff to last sip.

Once again, I say Wow! Two wows in one review, and that makes three. Not just dust, but perhaps Something in the Water’s best yet? Perhaps!

*Editor’s Comment: The tagline for the 1975 movie Jaws was “you’ll never go in the water again”. In 1975 there was no computer graphic special effects so the shark in the movie was a mechanical shark they named Bruce. Spielberg directed the movie, which was based on a Peter Benchley novel, for a low budget of $9M. The film grossed almost $500M. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 thriller Psycho includes the famous “shower scene” where Janet Leigh is the victim of a shadowy killer, more death in the water!

**Editor’s Comment: Cruel Jaws, also sometimes called Jaws 5, was an unauthorized sequel of the franchise. It was a low budget Italian film released directly to DVD. It utilized substantial footage from the previous 4 Jaws movies as well as other shark movies. It was not well received by the critics or the general public. One reviewer said “I can safely say Jaws 4: The Revenge looks like a masterpiece next to this." To put that into perspective, Jaws 4 has generally been acknowledged as one of the worst sequels ever made with a rating of 2% on Rotten Tomatoes.
