We have no reservations about Astoria.
I’m downtown and out on the town in little apple. At a fancy pants restaurant and the menu has some of the same old same old, with me always looking for a new brew to review. Lo and behold, an Astoria mahogany lager. What’s new? That’s new, and not the Waldorf Astoria but the Willibald Astoria.
Willibald is usually down on the farm in Ayr. Where the hay is Ayr you’re thinking. Just South of Oktoberfest Canada central as in Kitchener , I’m thinking. I assume the name of this Vienna Lager (a “mahogany” lager is the cold weather cousin of the Vienna lager) is from the famous Astoria Wien Hotel* right in the center of Vienna.
A semi clear amber, veritably glowing, let’s hope this review is too. A bit darker than the pic would lead one to believe. Malty lager on the nose. The taste is full flavoured, full mouthfeel, and full on enjoyable. Very tasty, more malty than amber, less bitters than a red, hence it is neither, it’s a mahogany lager instead. Malt forward, backwards and all points in between. Almost creamy with a very slight fizz to it.
If you’re a Vienna or an amber lover, like me, you will love this beer, like I did. As luxurious as the hotel whose name it bears. I have no reservations about this Astoria.
