You’re always welcome at Wrexham.

Wrexham you say? How has a little Welsh community become the center of attention these days? * A model of resilience, comeback kids. They had a football (soccer) team that was floundering. A brewery that was drying up. Things looked dire for the little Welsh shire. Sounds like a job for a modern-day Canadian superhero. No not Mister Canoehead. I’m referring of course to Ryan Rodney Reynolds, our Vancouver born Order of Canada recipient, People’s sexiest man alive, a Canadian actor so successful that they now refer to him as a Canadian American actor.**  “You mean the Green Lantern”, you say? I know, but all was forgiven when he gave us Deadpool. ***

Reynolds and actor Rob McElhenney bought the Wrexham football (soccer) club and created a media frenzy with the award-winning documentary “Welcome to Wrexham”. Next thing you know the team is winning! **** And they weren’t done yet. In 2024 they bought into Wrexham Lager, a brewery with a proud history that had had it’s ups and downs as well. *****

Maybe you aren’t a football (soccer) fan? Maybe you aren’t a Ryan Reynolds fan, although if you aren’t then you haven’t seen him in “The Proposal”, so charming. But if you’re reading this there’s a pretty good chance you’re a beer fan, and if so we’ve got some good news for you. Just like the football (soccer) team, Reynolds has another winner on his hands with Wrexham Lager.

Light golden and crystal clear, it’s a fine-looking beer. It has a malt lager sweet aroma, quite inviting. The taste follows suit, malt sweet, a touch of apple pear and a dry finish that encourages another swig. The fruit fades and what’s left is a malt lager sweet classic, easy drinking and yet full flavoured with a slightly crisp finish. The type of beer you could drink more than two of in the right circumstances. I didn’t realize until I read the fine print that this is actually a light beer because it has such full flavour. A fridge stocker and crowd pleaser, ideal for a football (not soccer) tailgate party.

They tell us “never underestimate something from Wrexham”. A little city with a big heart, a winning football (soccer) team, and a great beer too.

Ryan and Rob hoisting a cold one.

*Editor’s Comment: Wrexham is a city of 65,000 located in the Northeast of Wales. And in case you are wondering, yes Wales is a country, and with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland is one of the four constituent countries that make up the United Kingdom. However, the United Kingdom can also represent the members of the Commonwealth which is comprised of 56 independent countries including Canada, Australia, South Africa and India.

**Editor’s Comment: In 2010 People Magazine voted Ryan Reynolds the Sexiest Man Alive and in 2018 he became a dual citizen, attaining his US citizenship.

***Editor’s Comment: We did receive a guest review from Deadpool on Cameron Brewing’s beer Crown Jewel. He said, and I  quote “ what could be more enticing than one of Cameron’s Crown Jewels in my mouth”.

****Editor’s Comment: After almost folding, the Wrexham Football franchise under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney had climb from 5th league to Championship League status by 2024.

*****Editor’s Comment: in 2024 Reynolds and McElhenney bought a majority stake in Wrexham Lager to support the brewery and help expose it to international markets.
