Westy Taste Testy

Westy

Parsons Brewing Co.

5.7% Alcohol

We had previously examined the pros and cons of van life, for those that want to leave bricks and mortar behind for the freewheelin’ freedom that a van provides. However, many of us have commitment issues and years in a claustrophobic camper may not be our cup of tea. But for the weekend warriors and weeklong wanderers a trusty Westy is just the ticket. The classic campy camper van, the Westfalia, once a Volkswagen for the folks wagon, is now a French four-wheel adventurer. *

Parsons has their own Westy, an orange and white classic where the chickens come home to roost. This brew pays tribute to their Westy delivery van, time to see if their Westy in a can delivers the goods too.

A golden orange vibrant pour, a white roof completes the colour coordination with the Parsons Westy on wheels. It’s a juicy aroma. The taste is sweet juice and big time bitters all together for an interesting, arresting and refreshing quaff. Serious juice and hoppy bitters make for a one two knock out punch for this punch buggy brew. Not what I’d call a smooth ride but those back end grapefruit bitters provide a nice edginess and help set off the front-end juice. All in all, a tasty refreshing and somewhat unique pale.

*Editor’s Comment: In 1951 the Westfalia Company built a prototype “Camping Box” and from the 50’s on Westphalia became the official converter for Volkswagen. In ’68 they introduced the pop roof. By 1980 the company had introduced the Vanagon, which became known as the Westy and was fully equipped with kitchenettes and a bed. The Volkswagen/Westfalia partnership ended in the late 90’s when Chrysler acquired Westfalia. In 2011 the Rapido Group from France bought the company.
