Whatever You Do Don’t Shake It

Shake Lager

Equals Brewing Co.

4.7% Alcohol

There seems to be a whole lot of shaking going on. Bond wanted it shaken, not stirred. Taylor Swift just shook it off and Suzi Quattro was shakin’ all over. Live Johnny Winter And,* arguably one of the best live rock albums out there, includes Johnny’s cover of “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. He’s not just requesting but demanding that we shake it! And Rick Derringer is imploring us to shake it one time for him.

We recently had a beer named “In Your Face” that we took as an instruction. Just to be clear, this beer name is not an instruction but it’s Equals Brewing’s a tribute to a brewer who won gold at the Canadian Brewer Awards, Rick “Shaker” Baker. So whatever you do, don’t shake it.

Off to a shaky start with this review, time to pull it together. A golden pour, clear beer, ungilded by any head.  A classic lager malt sweet nose, invoking a substantial thirst. The taste is watery mild malt smooth, no hops, no bitters with a touch of first quaff fruit jitters. No real sweet at the show, but a touch of floral shows up in the fourth quarter. A good basic lager, just don’t shake it.

*Editor’s Comment: The album was recorded on their 1970 tour and released in 71 to critical acclaim. One critic, Ron Christgau, summed it up when he said “ this is what every live album should be and too few are: loud, fast, raucous and to the point.”
