When the Moon Hits Your Eye

Moonstruck

Lake of Bays Brewing Co.

4.2% Alcohol

When I think of Moonstruck I think of a big hair Cher lighting up the screen in a role that seemed custom made for her*, with Dean Martin singing “When the moon hits your eye…”** in the background. Now that’s amore.  Is it really acting if you play a spot-on version of yourself? I guess it is, because she scored the Oscar for that performance.

Fall is upon us and a big ol’ Muskoka harvest moon can both captivate and illuminate. Let’s see if this brew can live up to it’s moniker and light up my night.

A Magical Muskoka Moon

This new brew from Lake of Bays is a semi-dry dark lager which seems like a good match for a dark lager lover who is partially parched. A moonless midnight pour with a nice tan headliner. A classic Schwarz aroma of roasted malt and cocoa. A dreamy creamy pour, the words enticing and anticipation both come to mind.  Entice-apation? The oh so creamy and dreamy pour was for show, as in it didn’t show up in the mouthfeel. Instead a smooth watery lager emerged. A great dark roasted malt with a bit of cocoa body and a slightly bitter finish.  Faded sweet, bitter repeat. Unlike the Department of Morality, this beer is no longer sweet on me, but it is still a bit bitter. True to it’s descriptor it does have a semi-dry finish, with slightly crisp bitters instead of a more traditional cocoa sweet.

Not quite amore but I liked it a lot. Dark days are here again.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1987 movie Moonstruck, starring Cher and Nicolas Cage, scored Cher the Academy Award for best Actress. Olympia Dukakis won for best supporting actress and John Patrick Shanley for best original screenplay. A big haired Cher (it was the 80’s) and a slim trim sulky Nicolas Cage were the unlikely but eventually perfect couple. Cher has won an Oscar, Grammy’s and Emmys. Shanley is also a multiple award winner. In addition to the Oscar for Moonstruck, he won the Pulitzer prize for drama and a Tony for his 2005 play “Doubt: A Parable”.

**Editor’s Comment: “That’s Amore”, written by Jack Brooks and Harry Warren and performed in 1953 by Dean Martin, was the fitting theme song for a moonstruck Italian girl. “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.” The song first appeared in the 1953 Lewis and Martin comedy “The Caddy” Lewis had commissioned Brroks and Warren to write songs for Martin for that movie.
